The core PPC subjects are primarily assessed by way of open-book, handwritten examinations held throughout the course. Although materials may be consulted during the examinations, the exams are designed to test the application of legal knowledge, analysis and professional judgement rather than simple recall.

Examination results

To support the supervision and training of trainee solicitors, the Law Society may provide examination results to a trainee’s training solicitor and/or training firm.

In addition to examinations, trainees complete a range of practical and skills-based assessments throughout the course. These assessments are designed to reflect real practice scenarios and focus on the practical application of professional skills.

Assessment may include the following:

• Interviewing and Advising
• Civil Advocacy
• Negotiation and practical skills exercises
• Group project in Law As Business
• Written assignments where relevant

In addition to the core PPC curriculum, trainees are also required to complete four Advanced Electives as part of the qualification process.

Attendance and engagement form a required component of the PPC. Trainees are expected to engage fully with the programme and meet the required attendance standards across all pathways.

Attendance is digitally monitored across lectures, tutorials and skills sessions in both onsite and online formats. As the course is designed to build progressively throughout the academic year, trainees are required to attend a minimum of 80% of scheduled teaching sessions, with stricter attendance requirements applying to certain practical skills components.

Missed sessions may result in additional assignments, remediation requirements or delays in progression where attendance standards are not met.
