Tech Talks: In-House Legal  

A new interactive Law Society audio series on the Platforum9 app aims to connect in-house lawyers from across Ireland. Designed specifically for busy in-house lawyers, the forum offers a flexible and interactive way to stay connected to emerging developments in AI and digital transformation. Participants can join sessions live and engage directly with speakers and peers. 

The first in the series takes place on 28 May at 4pm with Matt Fawcett, Chief Legal Officer, DXC Technology. 

Other upcoming speakers include Chris Fowler, Chief Operating Officer Legal, Governance & Corporate Affairs, Rio Tinto (10 June), Áine Lyons, Senior Vice President & Deputy General Counsel, Workday (Date TBC), Bjarne Philip Tellmann, CEO of FjordStream Advisors GmbH (3 July). 

The inside track 

The Office of the Attorney General may not command the spotlight of a courtroom drama, yet its work touches the lives of every citizen and occupies a genuinely unique position in Irish public life. Lisa McCarthy and Aindreas Phelan bring us behind the scenes. 

Machine head 

For nearly 20 years, the Machinery Directive set out the EU’s rules on health-and-safety-compliance requirements for industrial machinery. Now it’s being updated. Bill Murphy (In-House Lawyer with Pilz Ireland Industrial Automation) takes a spanner to it. 

Practice Essentials 

A new suite of resources designed to help solicitors confidently manage the business of practice. This practical, ready-to-use collection of templates, guides, and resources tackles the real day-to-day challenges of running a practice - from people and processes to compliance and risk.

Law Society Professional Training has recently launched a suite of new courses across a variety of legal topics and skills-based training. Keep up to date with ever evolving courses.  

The Future Ready Lawyer

Law Society Skillnet is collaborating with the In-house and Public Sector Committee and the Southern Lawyers Association to offer ‘The Future Ready Lawyer’ panel discussion event, in person in Cork on Wednesday 27 May (2pm to 4.30pm in the Kingsley Hotel). 

We’ll be addressing challenges such as AI and technology, knowledge management, optimising operations, change management and stakeholder engagement.

Speakers and panellists include John Jeffcock, Winmark, Sean Groeger, BNP Paribas, Clare Daly, Tusla, Claire Madden, Energia Group, Róisín Magee, Office of the Attorney General and Ciara O’Donovan, NTMA. The event will provide a unique opportunity to hear from and interact with the panel of expert speakers and also engage with your colleagues, while topping up CPD (2 hours professional development and solicitor wellbeing, by group study). 

In-house and Public Sector Committee Annual Conference

The In-house and Public Sector Committee Annual Conference will take place in the Law Society on 7 October from 9.30am to 13.15pm. Further details to follow in future updates – stay tuned!  

MOOC: Social Media, AI and the Law 

This year’s Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) will provide participants with an insight into the rapidly developing impact and intersection of Social Media, AI and the Law. The course is free and open to all with a start date of 9 June. Expert speakers, lawyers, public figures and academics will review the current state of play, demystify concerns, discuss the potential impact in the coming years, and much more. 

ECLA General Counsel Forum, Paris 

On 30 September to 1 October, European Company Lawyers Association (ECLA) General Counsel Forum Europe will bring together 250+ general counsel and senior legal leaders across Europe to discuss the most important topics relevant to European corporate legal departments. Discussion topics will include AI, liability, sustainability, productivity, geopolitics, and much more.
