Testimonial

Community Law & Mediation (CLM) is an independent community focused law centre, established in 1975. We provide free legal advice, mediation and education services in communities impacted by social exclusion, disadvantage and inequality. Creating an awareness of rights and the law is a critical part of our work.  Our engagement with the Law Society in the area of public legal education has been transformative, both in how we approach our education work and the skills we have gained as a team.

Our legal team and staff from other departments, as well as our volunteers, have found the workshops and collaborative projects with John and the team truly inspiring. A number of our team were delighted to complete the Certificate in Public Legal Education. This engagement has facilitated a more dynamic, accessible and meaningful education programme.

One standout example of our collaboration is the public legal education workshop for independent law centres facilitated by John and attended by colleagues from CLM, Mercy Law Resource Centre, Ballymun Community Law Centre, FLAC, Irish Refugee Council and Immigrant Council of Ireland.

Another is our Legal Eagles programme, which we run with local Transition Year students in Coolock. The Law Society has kindly facilitated and delivered workshops with our students, enabling them to participate in lively debate and discussion. During one of our visits, Gemma McLoughlin Burke BL of the Voluntary Assistance Scheme joined students of Mercy College to discuss with them the career path of a practising barrister.

We look forward to continuing to learn and collaborate, and to providing an energised, dynamic education programme.

Jane O’Sullivan, Managing Solicitor, Community Law and Mediation
