The Law Society is governed by a Council elected by and from its members. Serving on Council offers a unique opportunity to influence the organisation’s strategic direction, shape the future of the profession, and ensure it continues to meet the needs of solicitors and the public.

Established under the Royal Charter of 1852, the Council provides leadership and governance, setting strategic priorities, overseeing performance, and ensuring compliance with legal and regulatory obligations within a strong governance framework. The Council comprises 31 elected members, four provincial delegates, and 13 nominated members, bringing together a diverse range of perspectives and experience from across the profession. Members play a vital role in representing the interests of solicitors while supporting the Law Society in serving the public interest.

Key dates 2026/27 election

By nominating a colleague, standing for election, or casting your vote, you can help ensure the Council reflects the profession’s breadth, expertise, and ambition. The Council meets at least eight times a year to consider a wide range of strategic matters, including policy development, committee reports, the establishment of working groups and task forces, and the appointment of Law Society representatives.

Nominations closed for the 2026/27 Council Election at 5pm on 10 September 2026. Key dates for this process are outlined below. 

• 24 August to 10 September 2026 (5pm): Nominations open.
• 2 October to 15 October 2026 (5pm): Election poll open
• 5 November 2026: Results confirmed at Law Society AGM
