World IP Day 2024

Celebrate World IP Day with our annual free IMRO/Law Society of Ireland Copyright lecture.

Published:

To celebrate World Intellectual Property Day, IMRO Adjunct Professor of Intellectual Property Law at the Law Society of Ireland Dr Mark Hyland highlights the intersection of Intellectual Property, Artificial Intelligence, and copyright law:

  • “This year, World IP Day celebrates ‘Intellectual Property and the Sustainable Development Goals’.

  • Innovation and creativity feature strongly in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI), in particular Generative AI. There has been a recent explosion of Generative AI and no sector or industry has been left untouched. However, Generative AI poses significant challenges for copyright and copyright holders.

  • The landmark EU AI Act attempts to strike a balance between AI innovation and protection for copyright holders. This is the world’s first comprehensive AI law.

  • Article 53 of the AI Act obliges providers of general-purpose AI models to comply with EU copyright law. From a copyright perspective, it is hoped that the EU’s AI Act will afford adequate IP protection.”
