Solicitor firms need to prepare for a competitive job market and a pool of talent that expects a positive company culture, flexible work options, tracks for growth, mentorship, and innovative technology.

Recruitment of new trainee solicitors and qualified ones is a significant investment for solicitor firms. From the hiring process to training, the goal should be to attract and retain solicitors for the long term. If a trainee is brought on and ends up leaving, solicitor firms have to start all over and reinvest in hiring another. You can attract a long-term employee by creating a flexible, positive, engaging culture that’s up to date on current trends and innovations in the industry and focused on supporting the goals of associates.

Become a long-term employer

Here are ten strategies to increase your employee attraction and retention levels:

1. Career conversations: Talk to employees about their career aspirations. See how they align with your firm and what you can do for them. Detailing a clear path can convince an employee that your firm is the best place for them to flourish.

2. Creating a sense of meaning and purpose in work: People entering the workforce today share the commitment with those experienced employees to making a difference in the world. They want their work to have meaning.

3. Let employees lead themselves: Employees much prefer to have their say in their work and how they complete it. This method is proven to improve job satisfaction.

4. Learn about what excites your team: Where possible, steer individuals toward work for clients where there is a common interest. Let new team members use the firm’s technology and resources for pro bono activities.

5. Introduce wellbeing initiatives: You may already have wellbeing practises in place but if not, consider doing so. An Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) is also a good start.

6. Foster a positive company culture: A positive company culture that values diversity, inclusivity and open communication can help attract and retain top talent. Make sure your company values and culture are reflected in your hiring process, employee policies and daily work environment.
