Every solicitor has a moment when the clock is ticking, the query is complex, and the answer feels just out of reach. That’s when the real superpower reveals itself - the Law Society Library, quietly supporting the profession since 1841.

Because this service is so central to practice, we’re shining a light on it this month - from its history to its tools, and the expert team behind it.

Physical books still line the shelves like trusted reference points, and with the DX courier service, up to five books can be delivered to your desk within hours for just €5. But it’s the digital offering where the service really comes into its own:

  • 328 eBooks available at a click
  • Access through the team to leading databases including LexisNexis and Westlaw
  • A bank of precedent documents — with 463 supplied in 2025
  • 12 subject guides covering areas from AI to conveyancing and environmental law
  • LawWatch, the fortnightly newsletter on judgments and case law

For many solicitors, this is the difference between hours of searching and reaching clarity quickly. In 2025, the Library team handled 6,033 queries, each answered with speed and precision.

New services are continually being introduced. ProView, Thomson Reuters’ eBook platform, was added in November 2025, while Trending Legal Queries launched online in March, covering topics such as assisted decision-making, rights of residence and enduring powers of attorney.

The Library team

Behind every strong service is a dedicated team. Led by Mairéad O’Sullivan, the library team works with the expertise and efficiency of a specialist unit. Deputy Librarian Clare Tarpey brings deep subject knowledge, executive librarians Eddie Mackey and Anthony Lambe support complex research queries, and library assistants Millie Brennan and Shannon Hiday ensure the service runs smoothly.

Together, they support solicitors across the profession, from sole practitioners and in-house counsel to large firms and trainees, ensuring consistent access to high-quality legal research.

The Law Society Library does more than provide information. It supports confidence, saves time, and helps you deliver for your clients. Contact libraryenquire@lawsociety.ie
