Practising Certificate Renewal 2026
As the Practising Certificate (PC) renewal period draws near, check out some key dates to be aware of, as well as updated procedures introduced during the last renewal.
PC application process – online only
Online applications are available for PCs, Qualifying Certificates, membership, and applications from solicitors in full-time service with the State. Solicitors wishing to apply for a Certificate of Good Standing or a Certificate of Attestation should contact pc@lawsociety.ie for guidance on the application process.
It should be noted that all applications must be made online, and paper applications are no longer available or accepted.
Updated payment methods
Please note that payment methods are limited to debit / credit card or electronic funds transfer. Cheques, postal orders, cash and bank drafts will not be accepted.
In December 2024, the Law Society made some important changes to our payment methods for payment of PC fees by incorporating the use of Virtual International Bank Account Numbers (VIBAN) for both individuals and firms.
Information relating to payments and how to locate your VIBAN can be found on the Law Society’s website: https://www.lawsociety.ie/help/payment
It is important to note that the Law Society’s Bank of Ireland account ending in ‘2086’ will no longer be in operation, and any payments made for the 2026 PC renewals to this account will be returned. In order to avoid any potential delays, please update your bank with your new Virtual IBAN, if not already done. You can locate your virtual IBAN on the Law Society’s website in your Dashboard profile under ‘your EFT Payment Details’.
Statutory deadline for applications
Remember that in order to have a practising certificate bearing the date of 1 January 2026, you must submit a fully completed application with full payment of fees to the Law Society on or before Sunday, 1 February 2026. Any applications received after that date will bear the date when the fully completed application and fees are received by the Law Society. This is a statutory deadline, and the Law Society does not retain any discretion to backdate an application that is received after the deadline.
Work changes? Update your details
In advance of our next renewal period, it is important to take the time to notify the Law Society of any changes to your place of work, position and contact details.
This also applies if you will not be applying for a PC in 2026 due to extended leave or change of career.
You can do this online via the Law Society Dashboard. Alternatively, email pc@lawsociety.ie
Changes to your practice?
If you have decided to retire from practising and/or are considering ceasing, transferring or selling your practice, please email: firms@lawsociety.ie. It is important to keep the Law Society updated to avoid being inadvertently included in the renewal process.
