This workshop is open to all those who have completed the Irish Sign Language (ISL) Introductory course.

About this workshop
The first part of the workshop will revisit the theories underpinning the establishment and maintenance of positive working relationships with Deaf and Hard of Hearing clients, as well as qualified and registered ISL interpreters. Participants will also refresh their knowledge of Deaf culture.
The focus will shift to language during the second part of the workshop. The linguistic features of ISL will be discussed and how these can affect the taking and giving of information when dealing with ISL users in a legal setting. Participants will learn basic Irish Sign Language (ISL) skills for initial client interactions. Practitioners will see live interpreted scenarios after which we will discuss the learnings.
By the end of the workshop, practitioners should expect to:
-
sign short simple conversations with their clients
-
understand basic ISL linguistics and their influence on the narratives provided by their clients
-
Have a comprehensive knowledge of the principles to employ when working with Deaf and Hard of Hearing clients, and ISL interpreters.
This workshop is open to all those who have completed the Irish Sign Language (ISL) Introductory course.
