Over 180 solicitors are attending the Essential Solicitor Update Clare 2019, a major legal conference, taking place at The Inn at Dromoland, Newmarket-on-Fergus today (Friday 28 June).
The conference is organised by the Law Society Finuas Skillnet in association with the Clare Law Association and Limerick Solicitors’ Bar Association.
It is an opportunity for local solicitors in Limerick and Clare to stay up-to-date on important topics such as conveyancing, regulation, family law and more.
Smaller firms
In February 2019 the Law Society announced its Small Practice Support Project; a strategic plan to support and develop smaller firms in rural and urban Ireland.
The plan is based on extensive research involving a survey of hundreds of smaller law firms across Ireland. It makes 11 strategic recommendations to assist sole practitioners and smaller practices to grow their businesses and achieve greater success for their clients, their firms and their local communities.
The plan recognises that smaller firms have unique needs and require support as businesses as well as legal practices.
Specific support needs
Solicitor Gwen Bowen of Bowen & Co. Solicitors, Sixmilebridge is President of the Clare Law Association and is attending today’s conference. She said the Essential Solicitor Update Clare is an opportunity for local solicitors to update their knowledge on important practice developments and also raise concerns solicitors may have relating to running their business or specific areas of practice.
“Solicitors in rural Ireland face many unique challenges. Working in a smaller firm or as a sole practitioner means that as well as facing the challenges of running a legal practice, solicitors also face challenges similar to running a small business.”
“Solicitors in Clare and Limerick are at the heart of their local communities. As solicitors, we are neighbours, friends, business advisors and legal advisors to the members of our communities. Because of this, we must be flexible in approach, adept at running a business and practising law,” she said.
Conveyancing
Today’s conference is the fourth in a series of a country-wide events designed to support solicitors in rural Ireland.
“Being a solicitor in rural Ireland can be very rewarding. However, it can also be difficult to balance the demands of a busy a practice, while staying up-to-date on practice changes,” said Ms Bowen.
“The Essential Solicitor Update Clare is the perfect opportunity to refresh our knowledge, without having to step away from our busy practices for too long,” she said. “We are lucky to have conveyancing expert and President of the Law Society of Ireland, Patrick Dorgan chair today’s event,” she said.
