Cyber security - sophisticated attempts targetting solicitors

The Law Society continues to receive reports of sophisticated attempts to obtain confidential banking information directly from solicitors.

Published:

The approach is typically similar to the attack highlighted on 4 August. The fraudsters are calling solicitors, pretending to be from the solicitor’s bank. They say that the solicitor’s bank account has been compromised and often ask for the solicitor’s card details, online banking details and/or activation codes.

Solicitors are reminded to approach any unsolicited contact, particularly about suspicious transactions, with appropriate scepticism and to never disclose this confidential information. The bank will never ask for your full card details, online banking details or one-time codes. Also, banks will never ask you to download software so that they can take control of your computer. Any such request should be refused immediately.

Solicitors are advised to end any suspicious call and contact their bank to verify the bona fides of the caller.
