Enda Kenny to chair Ireland for Law

Former taoiseach Enda Kenny has been appointed as chair of Ireland for Law, a Government initiative aimed at promoting Ireland as a leading centre for international legal services.

Kenny, who became a TD in 1975, was leader of Fine Gael from 2002 and was elected Taoiseach in 2011, standing down from both roles in 2017.

The appointment was announced yesterday (13 May) at a meeting of the Ireland for Law implementation group, whose membership includes the Attorney General, the President of the High Court, and representatives from the Law Society, Bar of Ireland, and Government departments.

As chair, Kenny will support the initiative’s upcoming programme of international engagements, including the annual Dublin International Disputes Week (DIDW), which will take place from 19 to 23 October.

‘Core national asset’

The former taoiseach said that he was honoured to take up the role.

“Our legal system is a core national asset, recognised globally for its independence, efficiency and the exceptional skills of our courts, judiciary, solicitors, and barristers,” he stated.

Kenny described the legal sector as “a vital engine” of the Irish economy, adding over €6.7 billion to a year, and supporting 52,000 jobs.

“Strengthening these sectors is not just about current economic stability, but about securing Ireland’s competitiveness and ensuring that our young people have world-class career opportunities right here at home,” he stated.

Minister for Justice, Home Affairs and Migration Jim O’Callaghan said that the former taoiseach’s extensive experience on the global stage would “further strengthen” the initiatives facilitated by Ireland for Law.
