Members urged to back Calcutta Run

For the first time in the event’s 22-year history, the legal profession’s Calcutta Run fundraiser is taking place virtually.

Between 30 October and 8 November, the Law Society of Ireland is inviting members of the legal profession, their family and friends to collectively run, walk, cycle or hike 10,000km – the distance between Dublin and Kolkata – to help fight homelessness in Ireland and India.

Essential projects

President of the Law Society Michele O’Boyle described the event as one the biggest fundraising efforts by the legal profession.

It directly supports a number of essential projects for the Society’s charity partners, Peter McVerry Trust and The Hope Foundation.

“In 2019, over 1,500 people took part in the Calcutta Run and raised €300,000, adding to a total of €4 million raised to date,” said Ms O’Boyle. “This year, the support of the whole profession is needed to help raise even a fraction of this amount.”

More participants

The Calcutta Run traditionally takes place in May, starting at the grounds of Blackhall Place and running through Dublin 7 to the Phoenix Park and back.

COVID-19 restrictions mean the run cannot take place in the usual way this year, but the Society is hoping the virtual event will allow more participants than ever to take part.

“Whether you are in Sligo or Dublin, or even abroad, we are encouraging you to join this year’s Calcutta Run. We will only be able to reach the ambitious 10,000km target if we support each other and do it together,” Ms O’Boyle said.

Virtual walk, run or cycle

Calcutta Run virtual participants are invited to run, walk, cycle or hike in their local area with their distance recorded on an app. The collective progress will be tracked on a map and marked on a route from Dublin to Kolkata.

“The virtual run is a perfect way to connect with colleagues in a safe but fun way,” said Ms O’Boyle. “Of course, participants are advised to complete the run while following all Government travel and health restrictions.”

Participants who register online will be directed to create a fundraising page on iDonate.ie. Individuals can set up their own page or join their company’s collective fundraising page.

The Calcutta Run is also supported by its numerous charity ambassadors, including RTÉ’s Miriam O’Callaghan and former Irish footballer Robbie Keane.
