Facebook’s UK users shift from remit of Dublin HQ

Facebook is to move data on all its UK users into user agreements with the corporate headquarters in Silicon Valley, California, from 2021.

The post-Brexit move will shift UK Facebook users out of reach of Europe’s privacy laws, and Facebook’s Dublin HQ, in a change to the social-media giant’s legal set-up.

The move follows a similar shake-up announced in February by Google.

Controls

“Like other companies, Facebook has had to make changes to respond to Brexit, and will be transferring legal responsibilities and obligations for UK users from Facebook Ireland to Facebook Inc.

"There will be no change to the privacy controls or the services Facebook offers to people in the UK,” the company’s UK office said in a statement.

UK privacy law currently still mirrors the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), though could eventually move to a less-strict data-privacy regime.
