Apply now for Women in Leadership mentoring

The Women in Leadership mentoring programme, developed by the Law Society in partnership with Law Society Skillnet, is designed not only to support individual career progression but also to strengthen the legal profession as a whole, writes Shane Farrell of Law Society Solicitor Services.

By encouraging collaboration and the sharing of best practice, the programme contributes to a more inclusive, innovative, and supportive legal community.

Adaptability

As the profession evolves, resilience and adaptability are as vital as technical expertise. Mentoring is a powerful tool for fostering resilience among solicitors.

By creating a safe space to communicate, the programme enables participants to share challenges, navigate uncertainty, and develop strategies for overcoming obstacles.

This process helps both mentors and mentees to build confidence, embrace change, and remain agile in the face of professional demands.

As participants develop new skills and broaden their networks, they are better equipped to lead, inspire, and drive positive change within their organisations and the wider profession.

Reverse mentoring

While mentees benefit from the experience and guidance of established solicitors, mentors also gain fresh perspectives on emerging trends, technologies, and the aspirations of the next generation of solicitors.

This reciprocal learning environment ensures that knowledge flows in both directions, enriching the professional development of all involved.

Participants commonly develop competencies such as leadership, communication, emotional intelligence, and strategic thinking.

Long-term impact

Mentoring is not just a short-term investment in professional development — it lays the groundwork for a more inclusive and sustainable legal profession.

By participating, solicitors help to foster a culture where diverse perspectives are valued, and everyone is empowered to thrive. The ripple effect of these partnerships can be seen in improved collegiality, stronger leadership channels, and a more dynamic profession overall.

Past participants are encouraged to remain engaged, sharing their experiences and even returning as mentors in future cycles, further amplifying the programme’s positive impact.

Programme commitment

We recognise that time is a precious resource for busy professionals.

The Women in Leadership mentoring programme is structured to be flexible and supportive, with a manageable commitment of approximately one hour per month over eight months, plus training.

Training and guidance are provided to ensure all participants feel confident and prepared to maximise the benefits of participation.

Next steps

Why not reflect on your own career journey and consider how mentoring could play a role in your development or in giving back to the profession.

Whether you are seeking to advance your career, expand your skill set, or help shape the next generation of leaders, the Women in Leadership mentoring programme offers a unique opportunity to make a meaningful impact.

Applications for the 2025/26 programme are now open until 20 June.

Step forward and be part of lasting change.
