Face coverings in shops now mandatory
New regulations making it mandatory to wear face coverings in shops, shopping centres and a number of other indoor premises came into effect today (10 August).
Face masks had already been mandatory on public transport. The new laws, signed by heath minister Stephen Donnelly, run until 5 October.
Businesses
As well as shops and shopping centres, the new rules cover libraries, cinemas, theatres, concert and bingo halls and museums.
Businesses covered by the regulations include hairdressers, tattoo and piercing services, travel agents, laundries, dry cleaners and bookmakers. Banks, post offices and credit unions are not covered by the regulations.
Exemptions
There are a number of exemptions, including for children under the age of 13 and people who cannot wear a face mask due to an illness, impairment or disability.
Those who do not comply face fines of up to €2,500 or six months in jail.
