Law Society educators upskill in Europe

Members of the Law Society education department travelled to the Bucharest Training Bar recently, as part of LITEL 2 (Lawyers Innovative Training on EU Law), a European Commission-funded project.

The project brings together a number of training bars from across the EU – including the EFB, the Law Society, Catalan, Czech, Romanian, and Brussels Bar Associations, who are working together to develop AI-related training for lawyers across Europe.

Guest lawyers from Estonia, the Netherlands, Poland, and Italy are also assisting.

Meeting in Bucharest for two days (20-22 April), delegates shared their knowledge of and experience with AI and examined the impact of AI on data protection and IP.

The focus was on identifying the current training needs on AI and GPDR and developing a suite of AI training tools that can be rolled out across the EU.

Core legal skills

Through a series of seminars, and workshops, delegates discussed what AI skills and knowledge lawyers required, the important of retaining core legal skills in the era of AI, and the legal fields that were most affected or augmented by agentic AI.

The Law Society delegation included Claire O’Mahony (head of lifelong learning) and Jonathan Patel (diploma executive).

The next gathering for the project takes place in October, with a train-the-trainer session on AI in Barcelona and a pilot training session with the newly developed AI toolkit in Paris in November for trainee lawyers.

The Law Society looks forward to continuing its work on this “exciting project” and the opportunity to meet and collaborate with fellow European educators of future and newly qualified lawyers.
