Human rights conference to mark 70 years of ECHR

The 70th anniversary of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) will be marked at this year’s Law Society human rights conference.

The Law Society Human Rights and Equality Committee in partnership with Law Society Professional Training will explore issues around the procedural requirements of Article 2 ECHR, post-death investigations, and the right to life.

Human Rights Day

The online event will take place on 10 December, when the international community observes the Human Rights Day.

The speakers include Phil Scraton, Professor Emeritus, School of Law, Queen’s University Belfast and Michael Finucane, Solicitor, Member of the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission.

The moderator is radio presenter Andrea Gilligan.

The aim of this year’s discussion is to critically explore the different aspects of Article 2 ECHR and the challenges related to its application in the Irish context.

Among the aspects to be discussed is the coronial system in Ireland and the steps that might be taken to reform and improve the system.

Hillsborough case

There will also be an examination of international developments related to inquests and specific cases in this area, most prominently the Hillsborough case.

The conference offers one CPD hour.

Booking for the free online event is essential on the Law Society website at https://www.lawsociety.ie/productdetails?pid=2235.
