Law Society past-president James MacGuill has died
Law Society past-president James MacGuill SC has died aged 63.
A native of Dundalk, Co Louth, he served as President of the Law Society in 2007/08.
As well as president, he chaired several Law Society committees – including the Criminal Law Committee and Human Rights Committee.
He graduated in law from UCC in 1983 and was admitted to the roll of solicitors in 1986.
CCBE president
Managing partner of MacGuill and Company, he specialised in litigation, with an emphasis on public law, especially criminal law.
In 2020, he was one of the first Irish solicitors to be granted the title senior counsel by the Irish Government.
He also served as president of the Council of Bars and Law Societies of Europe (CCBE), which represents the bars and law societies of 45 countries, in 2022.
