Official figures show that the number of homes granted planning permission fell slightly in the first quarter (Q1) of this year compared with the same period in 2025.
The Central Statistics Office (CSO) said that 8,092 homes were approved in the first three months of 2026 – down 1% compared with a year earlier.
The number of apartments receiving permission fell by 2.5% to 3,153.
While the figure for houses was flat at 4,939, this was mainly due to a 12.4% increase in the number of one-off houses, as houses in schemes were down 4%.
Overall, houses accounted for 61% of all homes granted planning permission, with apartments making up 39% of the total.
Dublin, which accounted for almost one-fifth of all homes granted permission during the period, saw a 34% drop in the number of units approved.
Dublin apartment approvals were down 31.6% to 1,034, while houses dropped by almost 40% to 388.
Last year, planning permissions rose by 7.9% compared with 2024 to 34,974.
