The European Commission has designated the AI system ChatGPT as a 'very large online search engine' (VLOSE) under the Digital Services Act (DSA).
The EU body has also designated the discussion platform Reddit and gaming platform Roblox as VLOPs (very large online platforms) under the same legislation.
The three services met the threshold for designation after reaching at least 45 million average monthly users in the EU.
The move means that the three services now have four months to comply with additional obligations under the DSA.
These include assessing and mitigating the systemic risks stemming from their service and algorithmic systems related to:
The DSA designation also gives the commission investigative powers to assess the functionalities behind these services and, where applicable, any related system.
The commission will be competent to supervise compliance with the DSA, in co-operation with Ireland's Coimisiún na Meán for ChatGPT and Reddit, and the Dutch Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM) for Roblox, reflecting where the services are established.
"These new designations mean that ChatGPT, Reddit, and Roblox will now be held to a higher standard of scrutiny and accountability in the European Union, in line with their large impact on our citizens and society," said technology commissioner Henna Virkkunen.
