Government nominates eight for District Court

Seven solicitors are among eight lawyers nominated by the Government to be appointed as judges of the District Court.

The seven solicitors nominated are:

  • Edward Carroll,
  • Paula Cullinane,
  • Tom MacSharry,
  • Mary McAveety,
  • Darach McCarthy,
  • Catriona Murray,  and
  • Olivia Traynor.

Barrister Andrew Gubbins has also been nominated.

Darach McCarthy (small picture) is a former chair of the Law Society's Criminal Law Committee.

The vacancies arise after four retirements, three appointments to the Circuit Court, and the resignation of Judge Brian O’Shea last year.

The Government has formally advised President Connolly of the nominations in accordance with constitutional practice, under which the president makes judicial appointments on the advice of the Government.
