Event to examine growing role of mediation

Law Society Professional Training is to hold an event that will look at the ever-increasing role of mediation as a method of dispute resolution.

The in-person event, in collaboration with the Law Society Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) Committee, takes place on Wednesday 12 March (2pm) at the Law Society, Blackhall Place, Dublin 7.

It is worth 1.5 general CPD hours by group study.

A panel of experienced practitioners will discuss practical issues of interest and provide insights for solicitors advising clients in mediation.

Mediation – a new era’ will be opened by Eamon Harrington (President of the Law Society) and Mr Justice David Barniville (President of the High Court).

Topics and speakers

The conference will hear a judicial perspective on mediation, while there will also be a panel discussion that will be followed by a question-and-answer session.

The panel discussion will look at:

  • The role of the solicitor in the mediation process,
  • Best timing for mediation, particularly in complex or acrimonious litigation,
  • Trends in mediation,
  • Property disputes and recent case law,
  • Growing numbers of family-inheritance issues and shareholder disputes, and
  • Mediation in legal-costs disputes.

Liam Guidera, partner at Mason Hayes & Curran and chair of the Law Society’s ADR Committee, will chair the event.

The speakers are:

  • Eamon Harrington (partner, CKT Comyn Kelleher Tobin and President of the Law Society),
  • Helen Kilroy (partner, McCann FitzGerald),
  • Martin Lawlor (managing partner, Coghlan Kelly Solicitors),
  • Julie Sadlier (Kieran Mulcahy Solicitors).
