AI training comes under DPC scrutiny

The Data Protection Commission (DPC) has launched an investigation into X (formerly Twitter) regarding its use of personal data from EU/EEA users to train its Grok AI models, developed by Elon Musk’s xAI.

Pinsent Masons lawyers write that the inquiry aims to assess whether X’s data processing practices comply with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), focusing on transparency and lawfulness.

Lawyer Isabel Humburg of Pinsent Masons stresses the need for robust regulatory frameworks to ensure AI development aligns with ethical and legal standards.

The inquiry also comes after X’s commitment to halt processing EU data for training Grok in 2024, following a previous DPC investigation, she said.

The investigation will examine the use of public posts and whether X adequately informed users about their data being used for AI training.

Special category data, such as sensitive personal information, could also be at risk if not properly filtered.
