Swords District Courthouse reopens after refurb

Swords District Courthouse has reopened after several remedial works were carried out.

The Alexander Tate-designed cut limestone building dates from 1845.

The facility has been closed since the summer recess after what had initially began as a basic refurbishment of the judge’s chambers.

Building faults

However, cracking was discovered on the cornice of the ceiling of the main courtroom. A structural survey uncovered other building faults and urgent action was required.

Fingal County Council is proposing a Swords Cultural Quarter in the vicinity of the building.

A mutually beneficial joint venture between the Courts Service and Fingal County Council is ultimately envisaged to the benefit of the local community.
