Prison service ups limit for in-person visits

The Irish Prison Service (IPS) is to increase the number of physical visitors allowed into prisons to three people, with effect from Monday, 14 February.

The IPS says that the three visitors may include up to two children, who must be under 18.

The service had restarted physical visits on 24 January, limited to two people.

Measures continue

Prisoners are entitled to receive one physical visit per fortnight, but they can avail of a video visit during the week that they are not receiving a physical visit.

The prison service says that visits will continue to be subject to infection-control measures – including the wearing of a prison-issued face mask.

While restrictions on the capacity of the visitors’ waiting area have been removed, the IPS is still asking visitors to try to socially distance, if possible.
