Total of 159 solicitors qualified to practise through Irish since 2010
Since 2010, a total of 159 solicitors have qualified to practise the law through the Irish language.
In 2018, eighteen people trained in the Advanced Legal Practice Irish Course (ALPI) to practise as gaeilge.
Sixteen of these were PPCII trainees and two were practising solicitors.
Successful completion of the ALPI course means that graduates are placed on the relevant Register/Clár online as part of the Find a Solicitor link on www.lawsociety.ie.
The current programme – ALPI began in 2010 and is embedded in PPCII elective structures.
Amendment
This follows the 2008 amendment to The Solicitors Act 1954 which updated the training system for practising in Irish.
There are many solicitors outside of this formal structure who practice law through Irish.
Those practitioners who wish to take the ALPI Course can fulfil their annual CPD requirement by participating in his blended learning (online & face-to-face) course, which runs annually from April to June.
There are 19 PPCII trainees and three practicing solicitors taking the current course.
