News

Significant changes have been made to the commercial rates regime by way of the Historic and Archaeological Heritage and Miscellaneous Provisions Act 2023. In the April 2024 Gazette, Alice Whittaker outlines important changes.

The Workplace Relations Commission (WRC) has published decisions and recommendations from 4 to 15 March 2024. Cases covered include consideration of what constitutes an offer of suitable employment in a redundancy situation, a finding of unfair dismissal where a worker’s hours of employment were progressively reduced and more.

Revenue is currently holding free online events to give an overview of Enhanced Reporting Requirements (‘ERR’) for expenses/benefits paid to employees or directors.

Applications for the 2024/25 Women in Leadership programme are now open. The programme, delivered by the Law Society and Law Society Skillnet, supports women who wish to grow personally and professionally and advance their careers to a senior level.

Training

Booking is now open for the In-house and Public Sector Committee Panel Discussion 2024. Taking place on 1 May, from 2 pm to 4.30 pm, at the Law Society, the theme this year is ‘Innovating and Leading in Transformative Times.’ The Panel Discussion will focus on AI: the practical implications and usage for in-house solicitors and the organisations/businesses they serve across the public and private sectors. The event will also be covering the topic of in-house solicitor’s skillset being transferable to other non-legal roles, a discussion aimed at broadening career considerations for the legal profession.

The In-house and Public Sector Committee aims to represent the views and promote the interests of this segment of the profession, while helping to support the Law Society in the exercise of its representative, educational and regulatory roles as they relate to in-house solicitors in the private and public sectors.
