180 solicitors from Monaghan and across the North East are gathering at the Glencarn Hotel in Castleblayney today (Friday 14 October) for a networking and training event.
The North East CPD Day 2016, organised by Law Society Skillnet in association with Monaghan Solicitors’ Bar Association, Cavan Solicitors’ Bar Association, Drogheda Solicitors’ Bar Association and Louth Solicitors’ Bar Association, is focussed on the specific needs of the region’s solicitors and the communities they serve. Topics such including farming matters, conveyancing and the new Book of Quantum will be discussed.
Secretary of the Monaghan Bar Association Maria Connolly, whose firm Maria Connolly Solicitor is located on North Road in Monaghan town, says that a solicitor’s advice can be vital in many different situations in life.
“There are many different instances in family and business life where your solicitor can provide invaluable advice and assistance - from making a will or buying a new home, or more difficult matters such as marriage breakdown and employment issues.”
For example, farming families across Monaghan are urged to talk to their solicitor as the best way to approach complex taxation and inheritance matters.
“The increase in the threshold for inheritance tax announced in this week’s Budget is good news for farming families wishing to pass the business to the next generation. Your solicitor will help to plan the future of the farm and negotiate the often complex tax implications.”
“Also, if you’re thinking of buying or selling a home, it is very important to be aware that the process has become much more complex in recent years. While Monaghan solicitors are seeing an increase in conveyancing, a good indicator for the local economy, the recession has left a lasting impact in the form of new charges and legacy issues.”
“Your solicitors will be invaluable in helping to navigate these issues to a successful house purchase or sale. Talk to your solicitor early in the process.”
Law Society Director of Representation and Member Services Teri Kelly explains that the seminar is one of a series of regional cluster events taking place throughout the country this year. “The Law Society Skillnet team has worked with local solicitors to ensure that the seminar delivers the professional updates that are most relevant to their clients in Monaghan and the North East.”
