Gardaí stepping up patrols in Dublin

An Garda Síochána says it has increased patrols in Dublin in response to the increased number of COVID-19 cases in the capital.

The force says the move will involve “high visibility” patrols by gardaí on foot, in car and on bikes throughout the county to support the public health guidelines, particularly those relating to social distancing and gathering in large groups.

'Critical phase'

Deputy Commissioner, Policing and Security, John Twomey said there had been good compliance with public health guidelines so far, but added that we were now entering a “critical phase” in Dublin.

He stressed that the approach of “engage, educate, encourage and, only as a last resort, enforce” adopted by the force throughout the pandemic would continue.

The gardaí made it clear that the latest policing plan does not include the re-introduction of Operation Fanacht as there were no travel restrictions currently in place.
