650 practitioners sign up for Law Society summit

Over 650 solicitors have already registered for the Law Society of Ireland’s Business of Wellbeing Summit 2020featuring special guest Blindboy, which takes place online tomorrow,  Wednesday 30 September at 9.30am.

The complimentary summit will explore the business case for investing in professional wellbeing and wellbeing strategies, highlight the value of a professional wellbeing charter, and clarify the rights, risks and obligations of wellbeing and mental health in the workplace.

Value of wellbeing

President of the Law Society Michele O’Boyle, is opening the online event and said: “The last six months have been challenging for many – professionally, personally and financially. Focusing on our individual wellbeing and mental health has never been more important. For that reason, the event is very timely.”

Conversation

“The summit will open a conversation and explore the purpose and benefits of investing in our personal and employees’ wellbeing. It will offer different perspectives and experiences from other jurisdictions,” she said.

“On the surface, the benefits of implementing a wellbeing programme for employees may appear self-evident. However, there are other, perhaps less obvious, significant benefits for organisations to consider. Happier and healthier employees result in better employee retention, reduced absenteeism, increased productivity rates, and other financial benefits for businesses,” she explained.

Trauma, stress and burnout

The Business of Wellbeing Summit will be addressed by a number of prominent guest speakers, including author, mental health activist and musician, Blindboy and Dr Sharon Lambert of the UCC School of Applied Psychology; together they will discuss primary and secondary trauma, stress and burnout.

“Trauma, stress and burnout are very real and imminent issues for colleagues in our profession, and I suspect these issues are not unique to the legal profession,” said President O’Boyle.

“By discussing them openly, we are removing the stigma on these issues, and we will develop a necessary, deeper and meaningful understanding of the causes, preventions and cures."
