Criminal jury trials can resume on 24 January

The Courts Service has said that in-person court business will resume, on a phased basis, in the coming weeks, after a review of the current COVID-19 situations carried out by the judiciary.

Jury trials in criminal cases will resume at the Central Criminal Court, and in the Circuit Court, from 24 January.

Earlier this month, in-person hearings and jury trials were limited due to pandemic disruption, with many judges, practitioners, staff, and other court users unable to attend court.

“It is now considered possible to start resuming in-person hearings on a more general basis,” the Courts Service said in a notice on its website.

Earlier this week, the Court of Appeal also said that it would resume hearing all appeals by way of a physical hearing, unless otherwise directed by the court, on 24 January.
