Dublin discussion on future of rule of law
Former president Mary Robinson will deliver the keynote address at a discussion on the international rule of law next month.
Irish Rule of Law International (IRLI) and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) will bring together leading voices from law, government, human rights, and international justice for what they describe as “a major public conversation”.
The event, entitled ‘What’s Law Got to Do With It? Power, Accountability, and the Future of the International Rule of Law’, will take place on 22 October (5.30-8pm) at MoLI (Museum of Literature Ireland), 86 St Stephen's Green, Dublin 2.
It is already a sell-out but there is a waiting list.
Strain
Taking place during Ireland’s EU presidency, the event will examine the pressures facing the international legal order and ask what governments, lawyers, judges, and justice institutions can do when the rules themselves come under strain.
Robinson’s remarks will be followed by an address from a Government representative and a panel discussion exploring what defending the rule of law means in practice.
Dr Andrew Forde (deputy director of the Dublin European Law Institute at Dublin City University) will chair the discussion.
The panellists are:
- Aonghus Kelly (international human-rights lawyer),
- Linda Kasonde (Zambian lawyer and rule-of-law advocate), and
- Darragh Mackin (human-rights and public-law solicitor).
