IRLI facilitates Ukraine judicial study visit

Irish Rule of Law International (IRLI) is facilitating a judicial study visit to Belfast and Dublin from 16–25 October.

The visit is held in cooperation with the EU Advisory Mission Ukraine (EUAM Ukraine) and with the support of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

The delegation comprises six senior Ukrainian judges, led by Stanislav Kravchenko, President of the Supreme Court of Ukraine, alongside five District Court judges from Kyiv, Dnipro and Kryvyi Rih.

The visit provides an opportunity for Ukrainian judges to engage with legal and judicial counterparts across the island of Ireland, exchange expertise and explore issues relevant to strengthening the rule of law and judicial institutions in Ukraine.

One of the exchanges took place at Queen's University Belfast (20 October) where Professor Louise Mallinder examined the relationship between peace, justice and accountability, drawing on the North's experience of conflict and dealing with the past.

Her presentation explored the role of amnesties in peace negotiations and the complex legal questions these raise for Ukraine.

The delegation will also attend the IRLI event, ‘What's Law Got to Do With It?’, at the Museum of Literature Ireland (MOLI) on Friday evening (23 October) where Mary Robinson will deliver the keynote address.

The discussion will examine the pressures facing international law, accountability, and the institutions responsible for upholding the rule of law.

The wider purpose of the visit is to strengthen professional relationships, facilitate mutual learning, and support Ukraine's justice sector at a particularly challenging time.
