How regulation resources help solicitors

Solicitors have been explaining how they use the Law Society’s regulatory guidance and resources to support their day-to-day practice.

Law Society Regulation Services has launched a video on its supports that comes ahead of a series of webinars, CPDs, and other learning events before the end of this year.

Anne-Marie Linehan (managing partner, JW O'Donovan LLP, Cork) explains that managing expectations and dealing with complaints has been one of her biggest challenges since taking over at the firm.

Linehan says that she found a Law Society course on managing complaints “really beneficial” to her and her entire office.

AML regulations

Colm Tobin (associate solicitor, JW O'Donovan LLP) says that the main regulatory issues for him, as a property practitioner, are compliance with section 150 costs notice, anti-money-laundering (AML) regulations, and maintaining an accurate undertaking register.

“It’s good to know that there are resources available, they’re accessible, and they do assist once you start to engage with them,” he states.

Hilary O'Connor (solicitor, JV Geary Solicitors LLP, Mayo) praises regulatory supports such as Regulation Answers, the succession hub, webinars, and the AML CPD events.

“If you have a regulatory problem, the best thing you can do is reach out and look for support,” she adds.

Learning opportunities

Last year, the Law Society’s regulation team:

  • Supported 79 new firms to open,
  • Answered 770 regulatory queries, and
  • Provided more than 50 webinars and events on regulation-related topics.

The latest addition to the range of supports available to solicitors is the new Practice Essentials: Your Guide to Regulation, which is designed to help solicitors quickly access key regulatory information, guidance, and resources in one place.

Regulation Services also runs a free helpline called Regulation Answers, providing information and guidance about general regulatory-compliance queries.

The Law Society is also organising several learning opportunities for solicitors over the coming weeks. These include:
