Book to be ‘insider account’ of terror response

Irish human-rights lawyer Fionnuala Ní Aoláin and her French colleague Anne Charbord have been signed by agency Prince Literary to write a book exploring the human-rights challenges of the post 9/11 era.

Prince Literary says that the lawyers’ work has shaped some of the most important global conversations on human rights, counter-terrorism, security, and justice.

It says that the book will draw on Ní Aoláin's six-year tenure as United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms while Countering Terrorism.

Syrian war

The agency describes the forthcoming book as ”an extraordinary insider account of the international response to terrorism, conflict, and human-rights crises”.

At the centre of the narrative is the enduring legacy of ISIS violence and the Syrian war.

The book examines the fate of thousands of women, men, and children held in camps in north-eastern Syria, as well as the legal and moral dilemmas surrounding repatriation, accountability for international crimes, and the continued struggle to uphold human rights.

‘A world transformed’

Prince Literary founder Maria Prince said that the two lawyers brought “extraordinary authority, insight, and humanity” to the project.

“This book is the story of a world transformed by terrorism, conflict and insecurity, but it is also the story of the people whose lives have been shaped by those forces,” said Ní Aoláin, adding that the authors hoped to encourage a deeper conversation about accountability, justice, and the future of human rights.

Charbord described the questions at the heart of this book as “among the most urgent facing democracies today”.

The agency says that it expects “significant interest” from trade and non-fiction lists when the book is taken to publishers later this year.
