Water-treatment deal faces competition probe

The competition watchdog is to carry out an in-depth investigation into a proposed deal in the water-treatment sector.

The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) said that the probe, known as a Phase 2 investigation, would look at the proposed purchase of Celtic Water Care Solutions Limited by CSG Chemical Solutions Limited (CSG).

CSG, headquartered in Shannon, Co Clare, provides chemical solutions to the water treatment, environmental, and hygiene industries.

Preliminary examination

Celtic Water Care Solutions is headquartered in Co Cork and advises commercial, industrial, and public-sector organisations on water treatment. It also supplies chemicals and consumables for use in customers’ treatment plants.

The CCPC made the decision after a preliminary examination of the proposed deal, which was notified to it in January.

It will now assess whether the proposed transaction will result in a substantial lessening of competition in the State.
