Public talk on Ireland’s wartime spymaster
The Law Society will host a public talk on Colonel Dan Bryan, Ireland’s spymaster during World War II, next month.
The talk is entitled ‘Colonel Dan Bryan: Ireland’s wartime spymaster and a libel case that shook the establishment’.
The speakers will be Marc McMenamin, author of a book on Col Bryan (small picture), and Dr Barry Whelan of the Law Society.
Libel case
Dr Whelan is a historian and author of Ireland’s Revolutionary Diplomat: A Biography of Leopold Kerney.
He will speak about the Kerney libel case that arose from wartime espionage activity.
Col Bryan’s role in pursing Kerney during and after the war, in the belief that the diplomat may have been a rogue official acting in collusion with Nazi Germany and the IRA, will be examined in the public talk.
The full pursuit of Kerney and an evaluation of how true or false Bryan’s suspicions were will be discussed.
The talk will take place at the Moya Quinlan Lecture Theatre, Blackhall Place, Dublin 7, on Wednesday 9 September (6pm).
