Limits down for on-the-job lead exposure

The Biological Limit Value (BLV) for occupational exposure to lead has been reduced under Directive (EU) 2024/869, with new requirements taking effect from 10 April.

From that date until 31 December 2028, the binding BLV is set at 30 micrograms of lead per 100 millilitres of blood, reduced from the previous limit of 70.

For workers whose blood-lead levels exceed the new level due to exposure occurring before 9 April 2026, but remain below 70, regular health surveillance must be carried out.

These workers may continue working with lead exposure if a declining trend in their blood-lead levels is demonstrated.

From 1 January 2029, the binding BLV will be further reduced to 15 /100 ml.

For workers whose blood-lead levels exceed recommendations, regular health surveillance must be conducted.

Declining trend

Continued work involving lead exposure is permitted where a declining trend is established.

These provisions apply as part of the transposition of the directive into national regulations.
