German AI consultation open to Irish submissions

Germany’s data-protection authority, the Federal Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information (BfDI), is seeking feedback from  Irish stakeholders as part of a public consultation on artificial intelligence (AI) and memorisation.

‘Memorisation’ refers to the ability of AI models to reproduce personal data verbatim from their training data.

The European Data Protection Board (EDPB) stated last year that AI models could contain personal data if they were trained with personal data – a finding that Germany’s BfDI says raises “significant questions” about the protection of personal data.

‘Practical experiences’

Its consultation, which focuses on large language models (LLMs), aims to gather concrete practical experiences, technical assessments, and normative considerations from stakeholders from various fields.

The results are intended to contribute to the development of data-protection-compliant approaches to dealing with memorised data, according to the watchdog.

The consultation is open until 31 August.
