History conference to focus on ‘Dáil Courts'

Dr Barry Whelan of the Law Society is among the speakers at a conference exploring socio-legal currents in early 20th century Ireland next month.

The event, entitled “'Revolutionary' Law and Social Realities: A Centenary Retrospective”, will have a particular focus on the 'Dáil Courts', the alternative legal system set up under the First Dáil.

The conference takes place on Wednesday 27 March (9.30am-1pm) at the Royal Irish Academy, 19 Dawson Street, Dublin 2.

Speakers

Dr Whelan will speak about Michael Noyk, the Lithuanian-born solicitor, who was legal advisor to Michael Collins during the War of Independence.

The other speakers are:

  • Mr Justice Gerard Hogan,
  • Dr Heather Laird (UCC),
  • Dr Leeann Lane (DCU), and
  • John Biggins BL (UCD and Maynooth University).
