The Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission (IHREC) is hosting a ‘Practitioner’s Guide to the Rights of Families at Inquests’ webinar from 4.30pm to 6pm on Monday 11 December 2023.

The event will be chaired by Michael O’Neill, IHREC’s Head of Legal.

In 2022, the commission published an Information Note to provide guidance to bereaved families on their engagement with the inquests process (that is, investigation of deaths) conducted by a coroner under the Coroners Acts 1962-2020.

The Information Note gives families a roadmap of the law, standards and procedures that apply at inquests, with a particular emphasis on their rights under human-rights and equality law.

Practical issues

Webinar speakers will discuss the practical issues that families and practitioners face during the course of an inquest, with a particular emphasis on the rights of families in these situations.

The speakers will include:

• Chair – Michael O’Neill (head of legal, IHREC),
• Dr Myra Cullinane (senior coroner, Dublin District Coroner’s Court),
• Sean Guerin SC – speaking from a practitioner’s point of view when representing families at inquests, and
• Brian Gageby BL – who will give an introduction to IHREC’s Information Note on the Rights of Families at Inquests.
