Child-on-child sexual violence in 73% of cases

Central Statistics Office (CSO) data shows that 73% of those aged 18-24 who experienced contact sexual violence as a child reported that another child (person under 18) was the perpetrator.

The survey shows 25% of women experienced non-contact sexual violence as a child, while 10% of men reported that they were made to look at unwanted pornographic material when they were a child.

Public place

And 32% of adults who experienced contact sexual violence as a child experienced it in a public place or outdoors.

Sexual violence as a child is defined as unwanted sexual experiences that occurred before the person was 17. It ranges from non-contact  (experiences not involving physical contact or attempted physical contact) to contact experiences.

The CSO report looks at child sexual violence experienced in the past by adults currently in Ireland and does not provide insight on current levels of child sexual violence.
