Event helps solicitors to build media skills

The Law Society’s Communications Day 2022, which took place earlier this week, focused on building effective media skills.

The Zoom event was aimed at helping members to develop a mix of practical skills to build their profiles as subject-matter experts.

Frank Greaney (Newstalk and Today FM courts correspondent and host of ‘Inside the Crime’ podcast), Catherine Sanz (Business Post legal correspondent and host of ‘Law on Trial’ podcast), and Mairéad Twohig (Cork's 96FM and C103 news reporter) gave an overview of how broadcast and print newsrooms operated.

Pitfalls

They spoke about how to identify stories or commentary that would be of interest to editors or producers, and the steps to take to pitch yourself to the media as a subject-matter expert.

The journalists also advised participants how to identify the pitfalls to avoid when engaging with the media.

Sonia McEntee (chair of the Law Society’s PR Committee) moderated a panel discussion involving Elaine Byrne, Simon McAleese, and Gary Lee – solicitors with extensive experience of media engagement.
