NUI seminar on Patrick McGilligan’s legacy

Mr Justice Gerard Hogan (pictured) of the Supreme Court will be among the speakers at a seminar on the career of Patrick McGilligan.

Entitled ‘Patrick McGilligan: a new statesman for a new state’, the event at the National University of Ireland (NUI) is part of a programme of events to mark the Decade of Centenaries.

The event will be held at 49 Merrion Square East on 14 July, and registration is now open.

Constitutional development

McGilligan, born in 1889, was a TD from 1923 to 1965, and served as Minister for Industry & Commerce, Minister for External Affairs, and Minster for Finance.

He was called to the bar in 1921, and later became Professor of Law at UCD in 1934. He was the 14th Attorney General.

The seminar will examine McGilligan’s contribution to the political, social, economic, and constitutional development of the Irish Free State.

Mr Justice Hogan will examine McGilligan’s influence on Irish constitutional developments.
