The Charities Regulator has appointed inspectors to carry out a statutory investigation into the Irish Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, a registered charity trading as the ISPCA.
In a statement, the watchdog said that a number of concerns about governance at the animal-welfare charity had been raised between March and June last year.
“Having engaged with the charity on the concerns raised, the Charities Regulator has determined that a statutory investigation into the charity is warranted,” it stated.
The regulator stressed that the announcement of an investigation was not, in itself, a finding of any wrongdoing at the ISPCA.
The inspectors will now investigate the society’s affairs, before preparing a report for the regulator.
