UK’s human rights legislation under scrutiny
The School of Law at Queen’s University Belfast, in partnership with the UK Ministry of Justice, will host a virtual event on the Independent Human Rights Act Review (IHRAR).
The virtual event takes place on Thursday 13 May, from 5.00-7.00pm.
The IHRAR, which was launched in December 2020, has been established to examine the framework of the Human Rights Act 1998, how it is operating in practice and whether any change is required.
The review is being conducted by a panel of eight members, chaired by Sir Peter Gross, a former judge of the Court of Appeal of England and Wales.
The event is part of a roadshow of public events hosted by universities across the UK with the aim of engaging and hearing views from a wide range of interested parties from the legal profession and the public to help inform deliberations.
Context
The event at Queen’s University will discuss the background and context of the 1998 Act and its role within the legal system.
The panel will include:
- Professor Richard English, Pro Vice-Chancellor for Internationalisation and Engagement at Queen’s,
- Sir Peter Gross,
- Baroness O’Loan,
- Professor Tom Mullen,
- Lisa Giovannetti QC,
- Professor Brice Dickson from the School of Law at Queen’s.
The event is open to the public and everyone is welcome to attend.
