In anticipation of the appointment of six new judges to the Court of Appeal, a special call-over of cases is being planned for tomorrow morning at 9.30 am in Court no 1 at the Four Courts in Dublin.

This will be used to list appeals for hearings on dates as early as October and November next.

Given dates

This will apply to appeals that had been given dates at the end of the current list and waiting time but which have asked that they be given priority if dates became available. 

The assigning of dates now will allow preparatory work be completed as the new judges are appointed. 

The legislation to increase the size of the Court of Appeal was passed last week and the government is set to discuss the appointments at the first meeting of the cabinet in September.

Proactive

The court is being proactive in organising this call-over as it will ensure the cases are ready to go to hearings in the new term starting in October.

Effectively cases that could have waited for appeals to be heard for up to 20 months are now likely to be given dates as early as October.
