Irish trainee and newly-qualified solicitors have co-ordinated the publication of the 18^th volume of the Hibernian Law Journal.

It was launched this week at the Law Society in Blackhall Place by High Court justice Mr Michael Twomey, who also served as judge-in-residence to this volume.

The 18^th volume features a review by Dr Tom Hickey of Kelly: The Irish Constitution (5^th edition, Bloomsbury Professional), compiled by Gerard Hogan, Gerry Whyte, David Kenny and Rachael Walsh.

Reviews

Glen Rogers reviews Delany and McGrath on Civil Procedure (4^th edition, Thomson Reuters), by Hilary Biehler, Declan McGrath and Emily Egan McGrath.

Glen Rogers has also written an article entitled “Litigation Funding, Assignment of Actions and Access to Justice”.

Resucsitation orders

Lucy M Davis addresses the highly topical issue of resuscitation orders in her article “The Right Not To Be Resuscitated”.

Lucy Rowan writes on “The Advent of Genetic Medicine – Emerging Legal and Policy Concerns”.

Human rights lawyer, academic and barrister Conor Gearty has also contributed as has Eilis Barry, chief executive of FLAC.

The future of the Common Travel Area, the doctrine of equivalents in patent law, and the recent decision of the Supreme Court in SPV Osus -v- HSBC are also examined in volume 18.

T P Kennedy, Law Society director of education and a founding member of the Journal, said that many editorial alumni had gone on to prominent careers.

Strong quality of scholarship

He also noted the strong quality of scholarship found in each volume.

Ciarán Donohue, editor-in-chief of the Journal, thanked the outgoing members of the editorial board as well as each contributing author for volume 18.

He also paid tribute to its academic advisors, benefactors from the Inner Bar and sponsor firms including Arthur Cox, Dillon Eustace, Matheson and McCann FitzGerald.

Chairing the launch, Mr Justice Michael Twomey, judge-in-residence at the Journal, commended the quality of successive and commented that the Journal far surpassed many of its commercial competitors.

Mr Justice Twomey made special mention of the high-quality speakers at the Brexit-themed annual lecture last November.

Unique insights

He also noted the unique insights offered at the award of the Hibernian Law Medals last March to 8^th President of Ireland, Professor Mary McAleese and former Supreme Court judge, Ms Justice Catherine McGuinness.

Both speeches delivered by both Hibernian Law Medal recipients have been incorporated into the 18^th volume, in addition to the annual lecture entitled "One Island, Two Systems: The Future of Rights Post-Brexit".

Valentyna Chekanska also won a prize for the best trainee article.
