Court hears apology over email remarks about judge

An unreserved apology has been made to the President of the High Court for email remarks about another judge.

Eamonn O’Neill undertook before Mr Justice Peter Kelly not to repeat comments about Justice Leonie Reynolds (pictured) about how she handled a case in which he was defendant.

O’Neill was answering a charge of criminal contempt over emails he sent to several different people, including gardaí, in which he said the judge was part of a “criminal conspiracy”.

He apologised to the court and this was accepted by Mr Justice Peter Kelly, who said he wanted to offer some “friendly advice” not to make such allegations again.

Advice

Mr Justice Kelly said he was referring to the Law Society the matter of O’Neill seeking and receiving payment for advice given to parties involved in a High Court case.

Eamonn O’Neill is a businessman of long standing but is not a qualified lawyer, the court heard.

Justice Reynolds had previously prevented Mr O’Neill from acting as a legal advisor.
